A Cost Controller's Take: Spend on the Right Loctite (and Don't Ignore the Expiration Date)

The difference is big: a 1-ounce letter costs about $0.73, while a large envelope flat starts around $1.63, and a parcel can easily run $5 or more, depending on weight and zone, as of January 2025. Verify current rates. We once mailed 200 sample folders that were too rigid, paid parcel rates all the way, and the shipping line in that job went over budget by $600.

The same principle shows up in vehicle graphics. People ask me 'how much do it cost to wrap a car' at least once a quarter. I still buy off-brand shop towels, generic pens, and the cheapest pallet wrap that doesn't tear. Those failures don't put a customer's order at risk. I just refuse to be cheap where a failure will be visible or expensive.

I also know I don't have a study to quote for all of this. I have seven years of purchase orders, rework tickets, and one very painful $2,800 service call. That's enough for me.

Use the right Loctite product—Loctite 638 for the high-strength retaining job, LB 8060 for high-temp fasteners, and never an expired bottle when the chemistry has to be right.
